The education ministers, in a meeting on Monday, decided to reopen educational institutions in the country in phases from January 18. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad after the meeting, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said that in the first phase, classes nine to 12 would be allowed to resume from Jan 18. Primary schools in both the public and private sectors from 25 January in the second phase will resume classes. All the institutions will have 50 percent of their students attend on alternate days.
However, universities across the country will start on-campus classes from 1 February. However, online classes will resume on January 11th. The education minister said that teachers and administrative staff would be allowed to come back to schools from Jan 11 after the winter vacations were over. Online learning can also be resumed from Jan 11, he said.
Elaborating on the decisions taken during the meeting, Mahmood said that board exams which were due to be held in March and April were postponed to May and June because “the children have not completed their coursework and we want to give them time (to prepare).” He also said in his tweet that “Let me emphasise that this year nobody will be promoted without exams.”
